Cleopatra VII Philopator was queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, and its last active ruler. As a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great.

Although Cleopatra was born in Egypt, she was not of Egyptian descent; she was rather a member of the Macedonian Greek royal family, the Ptolemies.

She was a mathematician, chemist, and philosopher. Moreover, she was multilingual and spoke between five and nine languages.

She was married to her brother and co-ruler Ptolemy. She later married his younger brother Ptolemy XIV.
